Saving money on last minute Valentine's Day gifts

What's the Deal? with Conor Knighton

Hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent on flowers this Valentine's Day, because nothing says everlasting love like dead plants. If you're going to be coughing up some cash for overpriced bouquets for your sweetie, you might as well get something out of it.

Here are some ways to make your Valentine's purchases a little less painful.

-- Buying flowers are one of the best ways to earn airline miles.  United is offering 30 miles a dollar for purchases at FTD, with 150 bonus miles.  That means an “Art of Love” bouquet, which costs $74.98 including the vase and service fee nets you 1,950 miles.  You could get $40 of value out of those miles, so it's like getting a $40 discount.

-- American is also offering 30 miles a dollar.

-- Southwest is offering up to 2,000 rapid rewards points.

-- You can go to a site like evreward.com to see who's offering the best miles or cash back.

-- You can find coupon codes all over the web, but make sure to compare deals.

-- If you can’t find a coupon, check out the American Airlines Mall. You could earn 16 miles a dollar.

And check out the grocery store. Some Whole Foods locations are offering 2 dozen fair trade roses for $19.99. If you go that route, be sure to pay with a credit card that gets you bonus miles at grocery stores.
