Best time to get online dating deals
What's the Deal? with Conor Knighton
The day after Valentine's Day is the best time to hunt for Valentine's decorations and candy. But the truly frugal know it's also the best time to hunt for love. If you're heading online today to look for someone to spend next Valentine's day with, there are ways to save money.
Here's what you need to know:
-- MATCH.COM: Until February 17, Match.com is offering 20 percent off all new memberships. You can find links to the promo on sites like retailmenot.com. The discount brings the cost of a three month standard membership to $15.99 per month. For an extra $4 a month, you get email read notification and a highlighted profile.
-- EHARMONY: Three months of Match.com is equal to one month of eHarmony which is one of the most expensive dating sites. Right now, they're offering a 20 percent discount on 6-month subscriptions, bringing the cost to $23.96 per month.
-- OKCUPID: OkCupid is free, but for an extra $7.95 a month for three months, you can upgrade to their A List. This means you can kill the ads, store more messages and change your username.
-- PLENTY OF FISH: Free site Plenty of Fish also offers a similar type of upgrade. With them, the 3 month upgrade is $11.80 a month.
By the way, these sites make it difficult to find out their pricing right off the bat. You'll be encouraged to create a profile and eHarmony makes you go through a whole survey before you ever see any pricing information. By the time you've filled everything out, the sites are assuming you'll invest some dough just because you've invested some time.
If you go with any of these sites, be sure to watch out for recurring charges on your credit card. If you're afraid you'll forget to cancel, consider using a prepaid gift card. At least they won't be able to charge you for more than the value of the card.
If you've got money to burn and no grammar skills, you could consider hiring an online dating coach, like www.eflirtExpert.com. For $119, they'll give your profile an overhaul, and for $45, they'll write 5 emails for you.
Online dating isn't cheap, but at least you've got 364 days before you have to think about buying a Valentine's gift.
