By the Numbers: The logistics and numbers behind Santa's night of work
Did you know that 1890 is the year Santa first began appearing in department stores all over America? While some kids wonder how he can in all the malls at once, what had us wondering were a few of the logistics involved in being Santa.
There are over 2 billion children in the world, and they are on Santa's nice list- so he'll visit more that 500 million homes in one night. That’s 175 million miles that he’ll need to travel to visit every one of those home. To pull it off, he’ll need to visit 832 homes per second going 3,000 times the speed of sound.
Santa gets an extra 7 hours if he travels east to west thanks to time zones and the rotation of the earth. This gives him a 31 hour day.
If Santa drank all the milk left out for him and just one sip from each glass he'd consume almost six million gallons of milk. That’s enough to fill 9 Olympic-sized swimming pools. If he ate all the cookies left out he'd have to eat over 300 million cookies, That is the equivalent of 14,000 elephants.
And if you combined the milk and cookies together, it would equal a whopping 38 billion calories. This means Santa better hit the treadmill because to burn those calories he'll need to run more than 14 million marathons.
Speaking of weight…if every household asked for just one Furby which weighs 1.5 pounds, Santa's sleigh would weight 1,980 million pounds. Which brings us to the reindeer that have to pull that sleigh. Regular Earthbound reindeer can pull a maximum of 300 pounds, but don’t worry, Santa's reindeer are magic.
