Extended Interview: Ben Mankiewicz shares his 2013 Oscar snubs and surprises

It's not a great day for Ben Affleck, but it is a great day for Bradley Cooper. Movie reviewer Ben Mankiewicz shares his thoughts on the Oscar snubs, surprises and sure things.

"I think that one of the big surprises was both 'Argo' and 'Zero Dark Thirty' didn't get director nominations. It's a bad day for the CIA," said Mankiewicz.

Mankiewicz says in his opinion 'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year. It's well directed, well paced and thrilling to watch from start to finish.
"Ben Affleck is one of the best directors working and I think he deserves an Oscar nomination," Mankiewicz said.
Another surprise was Jacki Weaver getting nominated for "Silver Linings Playbook." While she is a great actress, Mankiewicz said he didn't think there was a lot to that particular role.  But he says the Academy loves movies about people overcoming the odds and in a sense "Silver Linings Playbook" does this by dealing with a mental issue in a different way.
He also says it seems this year that the Academy steered away from movies with controversy which could be why "Django Unchained" and "Zero Dark Thirty" didn't get director nominations.
