Sugar Shake-down: Tampa dentist wants your leftover Halloween candy
TAMPA, Fl. - Have the kids had enough of that Halloween Candy yet? One dentist would like you to think so and he's willing to buy back your leftover Halloween candy.
Dr. Randall Diez, who is a dentist in Tampa, hopes to convince kids to stay away from too much of the sweet stuff, and he’s willing to put his money where his mouth is. Dr. Diez is offering to buy back your leftover Halloween candy and he's willing to pay $1 a pound.
“We would like to teach kids to eat in moderation, and also, it’s a nice way to give back,” said Diez.
To give back, Diez and staff will send the candy they’ve purchased from trick-or-treaters to “Treats for our Troops.” Instead of adding more sugar to kids diets in the United States, your leftover Halloween candy will be used to treat military servicemen and women. The candy donations will go to troops around the world, including Afghanistan and Iraq.
But really, is there anything wrong with enjoying your Halloween candy when you’re 10-years-old?
“It’s not bad if you brush your teeth right away, but sticky candy will stick to your teeth for hours,” said Dr. Diez.
The Academy of General Dentistry has a list of worst offenders, as well as some better options:
Worst:
Chewy, sticky sweets: Such as gummy candies, taffy, and even dried fruit can be difficult to remove from teeth, and can be a serious source of tooth decay.
Sour candies: These are highly acidic and can break down tooth enamel quickly.
Sugary Snacks: These include candy corn, cookies, cake all contain high amounts of sugar, which can cause tooth decay.
Best:
Sugar-free hard candies
Sugar-free gum
Dark chocolate
