What does it take to pick a winner at the racetrack?
TAMPA, Fla. - The horse racing season at Tampa Bay Downs began earlier this month. People generally bet anywhere between $2-$20 on a race, but you can bet more.
Racing fans say the key to winning is finding a winning horse, but turns out there are several methods to finding a winner.
Factors in picking a horse:
- Name: Some people like the horse’s name and go with it.
- Weather: Some horses race better in wet or dry conditions.
- History: You can purchase a booklet that tells you how the horse has been performing in the last few races.
Many people exam the horse before the race starts. Things you may want to pay attention to is the horse’s behavior and if they are sweating.
“You want to come down and take a look at the horses,” said Margo Flynn. "You don’t want horses that are sweating profusely, if it’s not exceedingly hot. That’s not a good sign.”
Tampa Bay Downs offer live races 3-4 days a week.
