PHOENIX - One of the most popular New Year's resolutions is getting organized. It ranks right up there with losing weight and getting in shape. It's also one of the hardest to start, at least according to professional organizer Charlotte Steill.
Steill spends her life getting other people organized with her company Simply Put Organizing. She says one of the reasons people have a hard time with it is that it seems overwhelming.
If you follow her three simple tips you will be clutter free in no time.
1. Donation Bin: Establish a donation bin in your home and make sure it is out in the open. Steill suggests looking through your home every day for items that aren't being used, when you see them put them in the donation bin, this will help clear the clutter and identify the products you are using.
2. Give it a home: Now that you know what you use, make sure it is in the area of the home where you use it; keep tools in the garage, supplies in the craft room, and files in the office.
3. Storage: Finally make sure everything is stored in a way that makes it easy to find. Steill suggests clear plastic shoe boxes and simple shoe shelves, both are inexpensive and versatile options that can be found at Target and other discount stores. They can be used in closets, pantries, garages, laundry rooms, pretty much any where you need to be organized. Steill likes to label hers with chalkboard labels that can be easily changed.
Steill has one other word of advice to help keep you on track.
"Put things back where you found them, it's so easy yet so effective," Steill said.
Street Eats Festival
With nearly 50 food trucks vying for your attention at this weekend's Street Eats Festival at Salt River Fields
, you'll definitely want to organize your culinary attack.
This year you can expect hot dog, Twinkie and pie eating contests in addition to the regular food truck fare. Chef Geoffrey Zakarian from Iron Chef, and Adam Richman from Man vs. Food will be holding cooking demonstrations.
General admission tickets are $10 and you can eat to your heart's content from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on both Saturday, Jan. 12 and Sunday Jan. 13.
