Is the mayhem of Black Friday worth the deals?

CLEVELAND - We’ve all seen just how ruthless it can get, like the chaos caught on tape at a WalMart, in 2011 and shoppers agree.

“It’s kind of ruthless around Black Friday," said Elexis.

“People are rude on that day because they want to be the first ones to get everything and it is just overpowering,” Stephanie said.

Will there be more “Black Friday” fiascos this year? Not for Elexis. She says she will most likely shop online so she can avoid being trampled.

Experts predict that this year retailers will be encouraging people to shop in their stores instead of online. But, for some die-hard shoppers, like Molly, it doesn't matter what they say.  They already have their plans in place.

“I’m up at 5 a.m. and I’ll be everywhere for bigger savings," Molly said.

While the focus for big savings is on Black Friday, some shoppers say they don’t care if they miss the day, because they can save all the way up until Christmas.

“I think you can find good prices on items without going off to Black Friday in the morning.”

“I don’t think really you get the best deals on Black Friday.”

“Unless you’re going for a huge purchase, you can really avoid the Black Friday.”

But, if you decide to go get that big screen TV, here's a warning from Casey Newmeyer, Marketing Professor at Case Western. “You can get stuff that is really cheap, but you have to be careful because there is only going to be a few of them.”

Newmeyer’s advice is to make a list and stick to it.

“You have to be careful because you might not get one of those deals and then you'll spend money on things that you didn't plan to buy or are no cheaper [lift : than they'd be at any other time of day] than any other day of the year,” Newmeyer said.
