‘My Brother Marvin' goes behind the music of Marvin Gaye

Musical stage play comes to The Lyric

BALTIMORE - The rollercoaster life of Marvin Gaye takes center stage at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore.

“I just bring out the whole truth. I just let all the skeletons out the closet,” said Zeola Gaye. She is sharing her sibling’s struggles in the musical stage play “My Brother Marvin.”

It’s snapshots of the soul singer’s dramatic life from growing up in Washington D.C., his rise through Motown to his untimely death.

“That’s all I get is what happened. What really happened? So I’m telling what really happened,” Zeola said.

A lot happened in Marvin’s life, especially when he teamed up with songstress Tammi Terrell.

“When they sung together it was so beautiful! That was the ‘love affair’. When the two of them were on stage, nobody else exists,” said actress Lia Grant who plays Tammi.

“I promise you it’s an emotional rollercoaster. You’re going to laugh. You’re going to cry. You’re going to feel sexy. All of those different emotions play a big part in this piece,” said Lia.

“You get to see some of the turmoil Marvin was going through battling with addiction. Battling with trying to please his dad. Battling with his own spiritual beliefs,” said actor Tony Grant. He plays Marvin in his 20s.

“There are a lot of things that you’ll see in this play that will help you kind of understand why Marvin was, who he was.  Marvin was a genius who was flawed, like a Whitney Houston or a Richard Pryor,” said actor Clifton Powell who plays Marvin’s father Marvin Gaye Sr opposite Lynn Whitfield.

Zeola says her brother’s musical genius lives on in his songs like “What’s Going On” and “Mercy, Mercy Me.”

“I just get happy inside. His music makes me happy. It helps me to deal with the fact that he’s not here with me,” Zeola said.

“My Brother Marvin” runs Thursday through Sunday at the Lyric.
